Newbie question

Postby Newbie » Tue Apr 03, 2007 4:45 pm

Hey Guys I am new to this whole RC Plane thing. I live on a big piece of property and am going to just be flying in my backyard. I just got myself a little beginner ready to fly Kit. I was wondering if i build a runway in my backyard how much room should I give myself for takeoff/landings? Like i said i really don't know what I am doing at this point. Any other advice or good web pages for a newbie? Thanks in advance for the help

Not that I am an expert on takeoff/landings, but it depend a lot on the type of plane you will be flying. Some dont require much space to takeoff/land and others, like jets and warbirds, need more room and are faster planes to takeoff and land. Maybe take your plane out where you can take off/land in a parking lot and see how much room you need there.

Thanks for the reply. Is it easier to start with to takeoff by hand or off of the ground?

Is there any good places to go on the Internet for tips for beginners or is it better to do a trial and error type of method?

Welcome to the forum. Which all-in-one did you get? Some of them will ROG (rise off ground), but others aren't so keen on it.

The internet can be a good place for info, but nothing compares with first hand experience. Just be careful because that experience can get expensive sometimes.

I had a RTF for my first plane. Trying to ROG without any ruder or front steering can be difficult at first. You will find yourself going in small circles on the ground. For those first planes it can be better to hand launch. Less frustrating.

For me now I enjoy ROG takeoffs.

Build your runway now because you will use it. :D

If you are new to the hobby and plan on hand launching your model, you will need someone to do it for you. I have seen very few newbies pull this off on their first attempt at flying.

When trying a take off from the ground you will need lots of room not only in length but in also width for your runway.

How will you be building the runway ? Pay attention to the wind direction on your property during the planing process of the runway. Crosswind take offs and landings are not always fun.

Our club is looking for a new flying site since the loss of Fairmont due to expansion. Would you be interested in throwing a fly in at your place?
