My suggestion... don't fly in normal mode. When I had my heli, I only flew in Idle up, never in normal. If you don't have to ever hit the switch, you won't hit the wrong one.

I was in idle-up, tried to switch in normal to land ( haven't tried landing in idle-up yet....still trying to get the hang of flippin' switches...not used to it with my planes...this was only my 8th flight ever using an idle-up switch so I'm sure I got mentally tweaked when something unexpected happened...they sure come down quick....AND panic sets in rather quickly

Like I said, I never used normal mode, even when learning. The modes are just like servo rate switches. One position for high rates and one for low. Idle up is essentially high rates for the cyclic servos. Just jump on in and if you can fly it on high rates, you can do anything.

oh, I didn't know that..I thought you always had to start and finish in normal mode....and have to flip it into idle-up while flying....it sure would help not having to find that switch while flying

Does the Blade 400 controller have a throttle hold switch? If it does, then you can put the heli in what ever mode you want to fly it in and then flip it out of TH to spool up and fly it. Just make sure your throttle stick is centered when you do.

If it does not, then you are probably right about having to get it into the air first because of the way your normal mode controls the throttle. Once in the air and you flip it into Idle up, you can leave it there until you are ready to land and spool down, though.

I never knew that. Just when I think I am ready for a heli I find I am not

looks like you were flying pretty darn well, with the flips and rolls ect, can you fly circuits around the field with it yet as well? figure 8s ect. they pretty much fly like an airplane with alot of rudder mixed into the flight at least its how i perceived it. sorry bout the crash though............. all in all that blade 400 seems to be a really great flyer out the box congrats

yeah circuits are pretty easy...figure 8s tend to be alttle sloppy and haven't tried any inverted yet as far as hovering or flying....but I'm havin' a kick with them...like learnin' again for the first time...give me some more time on 'em...by this summer should really be havin' fun with 'em.....flies just like a plane in FF seems like

I'm not sure I quite understand this. The way I understand it the rates wouldn't be any different unless you had dual rates set in the TX and they were tied to your flight mode switch. I'll admit I'm still a newb. I just realized a couple of days ago I wasn't setting my cyclic range high enough.

I agree on the not flying in normal mode idea. On my logo all my pitch curves are linear because the governor controls the throttle coming out of throttle hold. I don't have that option on the TREX because the slow start is still too fast. On that one I'll spool up to half stick in normal and then switch to idle up before lift off.

The dual rate switches control one channel; ie elevator. using the 2 positions, you can tell the servo that in position1, it goes this far and in position 2, you go that far.

The mode switch controls all 3 cyclic servos at the same time, but at each position of the switch, you can set how far the servos travel. Normal mode you tell them to go this far, Idle 1 you tell them that far and so on.

It's just like dual rates in that you can limit the servo travel.
